Hobby update #1

Image
Since I last updated the blog some things have changed for me in the hobbying world. The first thing that has happened is Warlord Games announcing that at the end of September this year a third edition of Bolt Action will be released. All 'Army of...' books will become obsolete but, allegedly all armies will still be usable, though I do wonder where my SAS stand in all of this. Due to this new development I have decided that my 8th Army project will be put on hold until later this year. Below are pictures of the 8th Army project so far. I also played my first game of Blood Bowl against a friend, a break from all the historical stuff. I used my Skaven and managed to pull off a draw, which, given my track record with games, was good. Anyway that is all for now. Happy hobbying

Unboxing #5: 8th Army vehicles

Here are the latest models to join my pile of shame an M7 Priest SPG geared up for the Western Desert and an M3 Grant Medium Tank also geared up for the Western Desert  M7 Priest SPG (Western Desert) The M7 priest was a US design that was sent to the British and Commonwealth forces in Africa. The Priest first saw active service at the second Battle of El Alamein. The kit is a resin and metal hybrid kit and, much to my iritation lacks instructions, detailed or other wise. The kit contains: Resin M3 Priest Metal crew and 25-pounder artillery gun Vehicle damage markers Stat card I am not looking forward to the 'fun' I am going to have assembling the kit M3 Grant Medium Tank (Western Desert) The Grant was another US Tank utilised by the British in the Western Desert against Rommel's Afrika korps. The kit contains: Resin M3 Grant Medium Tank  Metal Tank commander and gubbins Order dice Vehicle damage markers  Stat card The kit has instructions on the rear of the box and it look

Sherman VC Firefly The Firefly was a modified M4 Sherman, the Firefly was equipped with a 17-pounder anti-tank gun. The bow machine gun was removed to allow more space for the anti-tank shells. The Firefly saw use in the latter part of the war and provided the British with a much needed way of destroying the rather tough German Panzers such as the Panther and Tiger. This kit is a full plastic kit, which I like a lot, makes things easier for me. It come with: Plastic Sherman VC Firefly Vehicle destroyed markers Stat card Detailed instructions Decals The inclusion of instructions pleases me greatly, too many kits I have had to build have not included instructions, this once led to me emailing Warlord Games about a part I thought was missing when it was not. Note: I made a mistake when ordering the Sherman, at the time I did not realise they were not used in the Western Desert M3 Stuart   The Stuart was the name given to the M3 by the British, it saw action in many theatres throughout the

Today's unboxing is a number of vehicles I got at the end of 2023, they are all part of one of two 8th Army projects I am working on, these are for the 1942 British armoured brigade from Campaign: the Western Desert book, a copy of Tank Wars is also needed. I am unboxing the following: Crusader Mk I/II tank Flying Standard Tilly Chevrolet CMP 15CWT truck Bedford OY 3-ton lorry  Crusader Mk I/II tank The Crusader tank primarily saw action with British and Commonwealth forces in the Western Desert. They were particularly suited for the kind of mobile warfare that became prevalent in the desert, thanks to their speed and agility. It had a 2-pdr gun in the turret and co-axial machine gun in the hull. The 2-pdr was eventually replaced by a 6-pdr gun. The kit is a metal/resin hybrid kit and includes damage markers, an order dice and stat cards The kit looks nice and, assuming none of the resin parts are warped at all, relatively easy to assemble.   David Stirling's L Detachment SAS were formed in 1941 after Layforce a commando unit, of which Stirling was a member, was disbanded. Stirling believed a small covert unit of men could parachute behind enemy lines and sow chaos and mayhem amongst the German and Italian supply lines and airbases and along with Jock Lewes, who invented the Lewes bomb that the SAS would go on to use to great effect and Paddy Mayne who had a reputation for being a mad man and a violent temper after a few drinks, the SAS was formed. During November 1941 the SAS parachuted behind German and Italian lines, this turned out disastrous for L Detachment as both the weather and the enemy being on high alert conspired against them, of the 66 men that made up the SAS half of them lost their lives or were captured. The SAS changed tactics and began using the LRDG to transport them around instead, eventually Stirling secured armed Jeeps for the SAS, reducing reliance on LRDG vehicles. The SAS used the jeeps to de

An unboxing of yet another order this time from October 2023.  The parcel was, as always, well packed and with a free sprue, this time winter Germans. The first thing out of the box was Warlord's soldier of fortune for October, SAS hero Paddy Mayne, completing the set of the three founders of the SAS. Paddy Mayne would go onto be the commanding officer of the SAS after Major David Stirling was captured by the Afrika Korps at Gabes Gap, where he was attempting to link up with US forces. This blister contains: 1x SAS hero Paddy Mayne (metal) Pin markers are the next thing, designed to look like explosions and in a stand out red colou. The only downside to them is that it is hard to see what number the pin marker points at, I am going to have to find a way to make them stand out. Overall though they are a nice way to demonstrate pins. This set contains: 12x pin markers (plastic) Finally we have templates and effect tokens representing a number of in game effects, these are: artiller

As I have not posted in a couple of years I thought I would start off with an unboxing of an order I recieved from Warlord Games in September 2023. I originally posted it on Tumblr but thought I would do a review on here also. The post is picture heavy.  The parcel arrived well packed and secure with a free sprue of Italian Bersaglieri (I hope I spelt that right) as a gift from Warlord Games  The first model in the package was Warlord's soldier of fortune for September, Jock Lewes. Jock Lewes was one of the founding members of the SAS and inventor of the Lewes bomb which they used to great effect in the Western Desert against German and Italian planes.  The blister pack contained the following: SAS hero Jock Lewes (metal) The second item I unpacked was an 8th Army HQ blister. I rather like these models, they're fun and full of character, particularly the officer who is standing there with his mug of tea and pipe, the other model I like is the radio opera
